AudioBooks...
AudioBooks are a useful alternative if you barely get time enough to
read. Instead you can listen to them on any Hifi, car stereo or Walkman/Discman.
As well as for the time-starved, they are especially helpful to those
with sight-difficulties.
Hundreds of popular titles are available on AudioBook, on a standard
tape cassette (or spread across many!). A number of titles are also
available on CD.
As well as many readings of popular books, most BBC Radio adaptations
of books are available on cassette or CD.
Please ask us if any title you want is available as an AudioBook.

Out Of Print Books...
Out of print books include books that have literally sold out, in that
there are no copies left at either our suppliers or the publisher, as
well as books that are very old or specialist.
We have had books imported from the USA, Australia, and much of Europe
for customers who really wanted a particular book. As a rough guide,
paperback books will usually be cheaper than their original price when
second hand, whilst good quality hardbacks usually go up in price. However
this does depend entirely on rarity and the age of the book.
Please ring (01484 866413), email read@orchardbookshop.co.uk

find.

Past Events...
Ann Cleeves Booksigning and Reading
Shelley-based author Ann Cleeves launched the paperback edition of
the fantastic 'Burial of Ghosts' in the soon-to-be opened room of second
hand books on the evening of the 24th February 2004. The many people
who came along were treated to an absorbing reading of the first chapter
of the book by Ann herself, followed by wine and food and the opportunity
to have their book signed and talk to Ann. Copies of all Ann's books
are available from The Orchard Bookshop and any other good bookshop
(but not WHSmith).
Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix - July 2003
On July 21st 2003 the long-awaited fifth novel from J K Rowling was
finally released. A queue of children and parents were at the front
door of the shop at 8.20am, waiting to descend in to our very own Hogwarts
Common Room, complete with huge fireplace and bottles of potions, to
pick up their copy of the huge tome. Food and (non-alcoholic) drink
was provided, and a 6-foot tall Harry Potter strolled about the room
occasionally casting spells on the evil spirits emanating from between
the pages of the book. Accompaniment was provide by music teacher Sarah
Baker's pupils on wind instruments.

Book Fairs...
WorldBookDay Fair
At Scissett Middle School
On the 31st March and 1st of April 2004 students at Scissett Middle
School were treated to a half-hour out of lessons to visit a bookfair
run by The Orchard Bookshop. With a choice of over 400 titles right
there in the classroom, the majority of students found the book they
were looking for and left eager to get home so that they could read
away. Another benefit of the bookfair was that the students earned the
school library a number of books with which to expand its non-fiction
ranges.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the bookfair with the students,
it may soon become a twice-yearly event, and we are looking to run the
bookfair at other schools. Teachers - if you would be interested in
having the BookFair at your school please ring 01484 866413, call into

Denby & District
(From Pre-History to the Present)
Chris Heath
"This is the comprehensive history
of Denby and its surrounding district. It will take readers
on a fascinating voyage of historical discovery, from the Stoneage
to Viking settlements, into the Middle Ages, The English Civil
War, and finally through to present day. It explores the origins
and careers of the Lords of the Manor and their many Tennants.
It features Militia lists, school days,
Witchcraft, Surgeons, Inns as well as the numerous trades and
occupations of Denby's inhabitants throughout the ages. Denby
and District is an essential reference tool for the family and
local historians and is packed with nostalgia for locals and
visitors alike. Lavishly illustrated, it contains over 180 photographs
and line drawings together with 47 family trees and provides
a useful reference for anyone interested in Denby and its District's
past."

Denby and District II
From Landed Gentry...
Chris Heath
The sequel to the immensely popular 'History
of Denby and District' is now available from The Orchard Bookshop,
priced £14.99. On Saturday 7th of August (the day of the
Emley Show) Chris Heath (below right, sat down) was in
the shop to sign copies of his book.
The all-new second volume includes many
never-before translated documents dated from the 1300's onwards,
including court rolls from 1334 to 1787, the last wills of the
Lords of the Manor and details of a 13th century church at Denby.
Illustrated with almost 200 never before published
photographs, the book also tells the stories of families such
as the Hinchliffes, Kenyons, Brownhills, Naylors and Norton, whose
rise was a direct result of the Industrial Revolution. Much greater
attention is paid to Denby Dale - its growth, buildings and people
- and chapters are included on Ingbirchworth, Birdsedge and High
Flatts.
Judging by the success and popularity of the
first volume of "Denby and District", this book will
appeal to local and family historians, nostalgia lovers and absolutely
anyone who lives or has an historical interest in the area.

Richard writes: "Early one misty autumn
morning I set off on a 3 day, 40 mile walk from here in the Calder
Valley to the moors of the Peak District. I added a handwritten
text and printed it as a small sketchbook (the same size as the
spiral bound sketchbook I carried with me) to send out to friends
with our Christmas cards. I was pleased with the way it summed
up the experience so it has become number one in my Sketchbook
Sushi series."

Exploring The Upper Dearne Valley
John Wilkinson
"The author of the book has spent a
lifetime in the area described. This, together with his flair
for identifying the most interesting aspects of the region, makes
him ideally suited to the task of bringing history to life for
the local reader and visitor alike.
With the added benefit of wide reading of
the work of others, he uses his own observations to produce a
comprehensive study of the essential characteristics and life
of the Upper Dearne Valley - and the people who, over the years,
have helped to make it what it is."

A
History of Penistone and District
David Hey
"The ancient parish of Penistone
stretched from Denby Dale in the north to Stocksbridge in the
south and from Oxbridge to the county boundary at Saltersbrook
in the west. This book shows how the local country side acquired
its present appearance and how the district was changed by the
industrial revolution. It deals with local families and how
they earned their living, with ancient buildings, and with the
author's recollections of life at Catshaw in the 1940s. It is
well illustrated with over 100 photographs, many of them from
Joshua Biltcliffe's famous collection.
David Hey grew up in Penistone and retains
his local accent."

Exploring
West Yorkshire
Simon Warner
"West Yorkshire is a county of extreme contrasts. Between
the high Pennines to the west and eastern lowlands lies one of
the largest conurbations in Great Britain, a cradle of the industrial
revolution, rich in civil architecture and industrial archeology.
Yet within a mile or two of any town center there remain abundant
signs of an older history going back a thousand years.
"For
those wanting to explore West Yorkshire, there is plenty to see.
So if you want to know where to find:
- a town
hall that stood in two counties at once
- a pub
frequented by Branwell Bronte
- where
Robin Hood is buried
- England's
most northernmost commercial vineyard
- the
giant pies of Denby Dale
- an Elizabethan
herb garden
- the
stone lions designed for Trafalgar Square
- the
dragon under the hill
- a town
built on shoddy goods
- the
oldest Methodist church in the country
then why
not go Discovering West Yorkshire with Simon Warner? As renowned
photographer, and the author of several books and articles on
the area, Simon is the ideal guide to lead you and describe hundreds
of West Yorkshire's hidden places, oddities and strange events.
The book includes the popular 'curiosities', but also many fascinating
places which rarely feature in guide books, all organised into
5 sections, centered on Calderdale, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield
and Huddersfield. Every item is illustrated in colour or black-and-white,
and the book has directions and easy to use maps too!
Discovering
West Yorkshire then provides an up-to-date 'unusual features'
guide to the region, fascinating to residents as well as to the
tourist."

For Online Customers:
Welcome to The Orchard Bookshop. We have over
5,000 books catalogued for sale online, and list with Abe, Biblio, Alibris,
Amazon and ChooseBooks. You can search through our books using the search
box below (results will open in a new window).
We have been booksellers for nearly ten years
through our shop in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire (England) and have dealt
in rare, out of print and second hand books since January 2004. To date
we have shipped nearly 1,000 books, all of which have arrived without
problems, but if there ever is a problem with your order, our contact
details are readily
available so that you can email at any time or ring 48 hours
of the week if you need to talk to us.
SHIPPING:
We charge for shipping at cost, plus about 50p
for packing materials (depending on how much packaging is needed). The
shipping fees quoted on most sites are for a 1kg book (eg. a 500 page
hardback novel), but we reduce shipping for books that are lighter (ie.
paperback titles). Occasionally with heavy titles we may have to contact
you to request extra shipping. We always offer the cheapest method of
posting these heavy books. (A note to Amazon customers
about shipping).
RETURNS:
We aim to describe all our books as accurately as possible, but if
the book you receive is not as described, let us know within a few days
of receiving it and we can arrange a return and refund (at our cost).
Returns for any other reason are accepted but please contact us first.
In this case we can refund the price of the book but not postage or
packaging.
Amazon Customers: Amazon
charges a set fee for postage, currently £2.75 for postage within
the UK. We cannot adjust this fee for lighter books, as the 'spare'
postage money from the lighter books has to be used to subsidise heavier
books, for which the postage allowance is not enough. Although this
means sometimes you will pay over the odds to have a book posted to
you, for any book that weighs over 600grams you will pay less than the
actual cost of postage. (Go back)
